Reflecting on the Symbol of Freedom: Honoring Memorial Day

In honor of Memorial Day, I’d like to take a moment to reflect on the symbol that represents the core values of our nation.  The flag of the United States.

My journey with patriotism began in childhood, with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, each morning, in school.  I recall standing before the flag, my small hand over heart, reciting those words with reverence.  I was a little person and yet I was proud of my country. I understood that the flag was a symbol for my freedom.  I intuitively felt an obligation to strive towards and stand for the values it represented.

It's disheartening to see how undervalued this tradition has become, especially in terms of its impact on our children. We owe it to them to instill the significance of these values and the importance of standing up for them.

Did you know that the pledge's origins are rooted in a broader vision of unity? Initially penned by Minister Francis Bellamy 1892, it lacked mention of any specific country or God.  It was intended to be embraced by citizens worldwide. It wasn't until later revisions,  that it became distinctly American.

I acknowledge the complexities of our shared history.  The injustices that have tarnished it.  Certainly, through introspection, meaningful dialogue, and proactive steps, we possess the means to acknowledge past mistakes and forge a more enlightened path toward progress. A future of a more equitable and compassionate America

In our current landscape, marred by division and discord, we witness divergent expressions of patriotism, including decisions not to stand for the flag or recite the pledge. However, amidst these differences, lies a foundational principle that transcends individual perspectives—a commitment to upholding the values that define us as a nation.  Standing for the flag represents more than a mere gesture.  Standing for the flag symbolizes a collective dedication to the ideals of liberty, justice, and equality for all. It signifies a recognition of our shared responsibility to strive for excellence and unity, even in the face of adversity.

While dissent and disagreement are integral aspects of our democracy, they do not diminish the importance of honoring this national symbol. Rather, the flag underscores the importance to engage in constructive dialogue and action.  Reminding us of our common purpose and commitment to the common good.  As we stand together for the flag, we affirm our allegiance.   Not only to our country but also to the enduring principles that unite us as a people.

As we gather on this sacred Memorial Day.  As we pay homage to the courageous souls who valiantly safeguarded our liberties beneath the united flag “by which we stand.”  Let us renew our resolve to fortify our beloved nation.  Let us rekindle our individual commitment as proud Americans, steadfast and determined to unify in our diversity.  So that united, we may shine as examples to our children, in action and in word.

Together we can pave a future illuminated by hope and opportunity for generations yet to come.

With gratitude and remembrance,
